25 Years of Caring: Dr. Thierry Bonnabesse and the Art of Pain Management

By Patrick Kincaid, Vermont Maturity Correspondent.

There is a very old saying that nurses and doctors are angels in disguise. In this case, Dr. Thierry Bonnabesse is the epitome of that metaphor. Having devoted the past 25 years to the treatment of pain, Dr. Bonnabesse has helped thousands of patients regain function and improve their quality of life.

Raised in France, Dr. Bonnabesse came to the United States in 1987. When asked how he ended up in Vermont, Dr. Bonnabesse replied, “Life brought me to Vermont in 1987, and I quickly fell in love with the state. I completed both my undergraduate education and medical school at the University of Vermont. The only reason I left was because Vermont did not offer the residency and fellowship training, I needed, which I completed in California. My career later took me to New York, but Vermont has always been home to me. Both of my children live here and being able to care for patients in a community that means so much to me is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”

In 2004, Dr. Bonnabesse founded Champlain Spine & Pain Management with a simple mission: to bring an exceptional breadth of advanced pain therapies and clinical expertise to patients throughout Vermont, New York, Canada, and the Northeast.

Dr. Bonnabesse has a wonderful sense of humor about his profession. When asked, “What does it take to become a doctor in your line of work?” without missing a beat, he responded, “A lot of gray hair.”

Collectively, the staff of Champlain Spine & Pain Management brings more than 60 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of spine, nerve, joint, and chronic pain conditions, with Dr. Bonnabesse accounting for nearly half of that experience himself. Although he has been practicing since 2001, Dr. Bonnabesse is not one to become complacent or believe he has learned it all. When asked what makes his team stand out, he answered:

“We offer things that cannot be offered anywhere else. We started out concentrating on the basics in pain management but quickly realized that we had opportunities to develop specialties that include cutting-edge technology. We are constantly updating with the newest technologies available. What makes our practice different is not simply access to advanced therapies. It is our extensive experience across a broad range of the most innovative treatments available in modern pain medicine.”

Over the past 25 years, using more than 60 years of combined clinical experience, Champlain Spine & Pain Management has treated more than 20,000 patients and performed over 100,000 image-guided procedures.

It must truly be an amazing staff because when asked who he relied on the most, Dr. Bonnabesse replied in a way that reflected his appreciation for the entire team:

“There are far too many people who provide an invaluable service to our team for me to pick ten standouts, much less one. Our institute currently has six providers and sixty staff members. Many have been with us for years, and every single one contributes immensely to the success of this practice. Collectively, our physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants bring more than 60 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of spine, nerve, joint, and chronic pain conditions. In addition to caring for patients, members of our team actively participate in physician education, professional conferences, and healthcare innovation, helping bring the latest advances in pain medicine to our region.”

Naturally, there is the question of what makes Dr. Bonnabesse’s practice stand out from others, and he was able to answer that as well:

“Because we offer more options than most pain centers, we can better tailor treatment to the individual patient rather than relying on a limited set of procedures. This allows us to create highly individualized treatment plans designed around each patient’s unique condition, goals, and circumstances.”

Dr. Bonnabesse understands that the average person is going to have questions and concerns about what they can expect when they come to Champlain Spine & Pain Management. When asked, he stressed:

“Don’t be fooled by the name of our practice. We treat pain well beyond just spine. We want to help people dealing with pain throughout the body. Living with chronic pain can be physically exhausting and emotionally draining. Many patients arrive feeling frustrated, discouraged, or anxious after months or even years of searching for answers. That is why we have worked to create an experience that feels different from the moment patients walk through our doors.”

Finally, when asked what he is most excited about at the moment, Dr. Bonnabesse spoke enthusiastically about the opening of the practice’s newest location at 463 Mountain View Drive in Colchester, Vermont.

“For me, this is about continuing to bring the most advanced pain treatments available to the people of Vermont and the surrounding region. Vermont gave me my education, my family, and a community I care deeply about. Expanding our presence here allows us to help more patients regain their quality of life while ensuring they have access to cutting-edge therapies close to home.”
